Opposition First-Term Lawmakers Announce Counter-Suit for False Accusation in Response to Ruling Party's Plan to File Charges of Sedition

"It's Like an Accomplice to a Robbery Accusing the Victim"

On the 30th, first-term lawmakers of the Democratic Party of Korea claimed that the statement by Kwon Seong-dong, floor leader of the People Power Party, who announced his intention to file charges against them for inciting rebellion, was "a clear case of defamation by false accusation and false accusation."

The steering committee members of 'Deomincho,' a group of first-term Democratic Party lawmakers, held a press conference at the National Assembly on the same day and said, "If Kwon's complaint is filed, we will file a counter-charge for false accusation."

They criticized Kwon Seong-dong, saying, "There is a limit even to audacity," and added, "It is no different from a situation where a robber with a knife breaks into a house, and when the victim tries to accuse the robber, the robber's accomplice threatens to accuse the victim instead."

They continued, "We have no intention of ignoring legal procedures," emphasizing, "We will proceed with the 'impeachment motion,' a constitutional right, according to the procedures stipulated by the National Assembly Act."

Jung Jin-wook, a steering committee member of Deomincho and secretary to the Democratic Party floor leader, responded to reporters' questions regarding the 'serial impeachment of cabinet members' proposed by some first-term lawmakers, saying, "The leadership is not considering serial impeachment at all," and "The leadership will gather such opinions and announce a final course of action."

Earlier, floor leader Kwon announced his intention to file charges for inciting rebellion against all 70 first-term Democratic Party lawmakers who warned that they would initiate impeachment proceedings against Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, acting president, if the constitutional court nominee Ma Eun-hyuk was not appointed, as well as against party leader Lee Jae-myung and broadcaster Kim Eo-jun.
