Companies attending the hearing stated that even if they develop new technologies using advanced technologies such as synthetic biology, they face difficulties in commercialization due to regulations related to manufacturing and production. They emphasized the need for regulatory relaxation to create an industrial environment where technology development can lead to commercialization.
Participants also suggested that if small and medium-sized venture companies lacking funds and manpower utilize the facilities within the zone, it could serve as an excellent testbed to verify the potential for innovation and commercialization in bio-manufacturing technology.
Daejeon Technopark and the city of Daejeon plan to actively review the opinions expressed at the hearing and supplement the zone plan accordingly.
Last December, the city was selected as a candidate for the Global Innovation Zone by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and is currently undergoing the review process for designation by utilizing Daejeon's existing infrastructure and resources.
If the zone is finally designated in June, the plan is to operate commercial public production facilities for a prototype sales market verification testbed and to conduct demonstration projects to simplify the review process for duplicate review materials over the next four years until 2029.
In addition, the city plans to support overseas joint research and development (R&D) and overseas certifications to facilitate rapid entry of the advanced bio industry into global markets and to secure global competitiveness.
Kim Wooyeon, President of Daejeon Technopark, said, "It is necessary to create an environment where the development of new materials using synthetic biology, an advanced bio-technology, can lead to commercialization. We will strive to help Daejeon leap forward as an advanced bio-manufacturing innovation cluster by combining Daejeon's excellent fundamental technology and infrastructure with regulatory relaxation through the designation of the zone."
