On this day, Gwangju Shinsegae held an eco-plogging event in the area around Gwangcheon-dong and the Gwangju Stream, with about 20 employees participating. During the event, an ecological commentator explained the types and roles of plants and animals living along the stream, highlighting the value of the river ecosystem.

This year, Gwangju Shinsegae plans to take the lead in raising local residents' awareness of environmental issues by partnering with the Gwangju Environmental Movement Association. Notably, an otter population survey will be conducted to protect endangered animals living in downtown Gwangju.

Although otters are known to inhabit downtown Gwangju and are designated as natural monuments, there is a lack of specific data on their habitats and population, resulting in casualties such as roadkill.

To prevent this, experts and citizens will participate in identifying habitats and population status, collecting relevant data by visiting major habitats along the Gwangju Stream and Mudeungsan.

Programs to teach children about the importance of the natural environment are also being prepared. The ecological education program, called "Children's Nature Outing," will be held four times, visiting places such as the Mudeungsan Ecological Exploration Center for activities like observing living creatures and exploring insects. Any elementary school student who loves nature can apply.

A Citizen Scientist Academy will also be held for citizens interested in nature and living organisms. The Citizen Scientist Academy will begin on the 4th of next month, with Dr. Han Sanghoon from the Korean Peninsula Wildlife Research Institute giving the first lecture on "Otters Among Us," and will be held a total of five times.

The programs conducted by Gwangju Shinsegae in collaboration with the Gwangju Environmental Movement Association are open to all citizens and students interested in nature. Participants will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis, and for more details, please contact the Gwangju Environmental Movement Association.

Lee Donghoon, CEO of Gwangju Shinsegae, said, "To mark the 30th anniversary of our opening, we plan to further strengthen our ESG activities by adding eco-friendly programs," and added, "We hope that activities such as the Citizen Scientist Academy and Children's Nature Outing will provide opportunities to realize the value of our one and only nature."
