Chungnam Province will begin developing a large-scale aquaculture complex equipped with advanced technologies such as information and communication technology (ICT) in the Seokmun Reclamation Area of Dangjin.

According to the province on the 18th, it was selected for the "Smart Aquaculture Cluster" project organized by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, and will invest 40 billion KRW by 2028 to establish a smart aquaculture cluster on a 105,000-square-meter site in the reclamation area.

This project is the second phase following the initial aquaculture complex development. It will build aquaculture facilities utilizing smart technologies and plans to farm cold-water species such as sea trout and whiteleg shrimp.

In particular, the project is expected to enhance carbon neutrality and price competitiveness by applying solar power, liquefied natural gas (LNG) cold energy, and a recirculating filtration system.

The province expects that, once the smart aquaculture cluster is established, it will produce 1,050 tons of sea trout and 150 tons of whiteleg shrimp annually.

Previously, Jeonnam Goheung and Incheon Ongjin also participated in the competition for this project, with three locations in total vying for selection.

The province plans to link this project with the fisheries food cluster project, which is currently undergoing a preliminary feasibility study, to develop the Seokmun Reclamation Area into a large-scale eco-friendly comprehensive fisheries complex.

Jeon Sangwook, Director of the Province's Oceans and Fisheries Bureau, said, "The Smart Aquaculture Cluster will lead the advancement of Korea's high-tech aquaculture industry," adding, "We expect that the comprehensive fisheries processing complex utilizing the reclamation area will revitalize the aquaculture industry and fishing villages."
