Coupang announced on the 12th that it will purchase and sell at a discount more than 1,000 tons of fruits produced by local farms, such as tangerines and strawberries.
Earlier this month, Coupang purchased about 600 tons of fruits produced by local farms nationwide, and plans to purchase an additional 400 tons or more by the 16th. The fruits come from farms in 12 regions including Chungbuk (Chungju), Chungnam (Nonsan, Buyeo), Gyeongbuk (Andong, Uiseong), Gyeongnam (Jinju, Hadong, Miryang), Jeonnam (Damyang), and Jeju.
The scale of Coupang's fruit purchases this time has doubled compared to the same period last year (March 1st to 2nd week, 580 tons). Coupang expects this to provide relief to local farms struggling due to sluggish demand after this year's Lunar New Year holiday and domestic economic downturn.
A fruit discount event will also be held until the 16th. It offers discounts of up to 46% compared to market prices. For example, Seongju sugar-selected chamoe melons weighing 1.2 kg are sold for around 11,000 won, and Chungju imperfect apples weighing 3 kg are sold for around 16,000 won.
A Coupang representative said, "We will continue to prepare various support measures to promote the consumption of domestic agricultural products."
