Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Wono) announced that it will increase the annual maximum support for childcare leave expenses up to 800,000 KRW for low-income single-parent workers.

The childcare leave expense support program is a system that provides a certain amount of support to low-income single-parent workers residing in Seongdong-gu who take unpaid childcare leave for reasons such as their children under 18 attending school entrance or graduation ceremonies, consultations, or hospital visits.

The district previously supported 50,000 KRW per day (8 hours) for up to 5 days, with a maximum of 250,000 KRW annually. However, starting this year, considering the minimum wage, the support amount has been increased and the number of supported days expanded to 80,000 KRW per day (8 hours) for up to 10 days, with a maximum of 800,000 KRW annually.

This measure aims to reduce the burden on single-parent workers regarding unpaid childcare leave and encourage them to actively use the leave, as the utilization rate of childcare leave has been low.

Previously, when Seongdong-gu provided policy guidance and individual counseling to eligible childcare leave recipients, the low support amount, which was below the minimum wage, was cited as a main reason for not using childcare leave.

The district plans to apply the expanded childcare leave support from January 1, 2025, and will also provide retroactive support for users of childcare leave from January of this year.

Those who wish to apply can visit their local community service center with the application form and supporting documents or make a quick reservation through the Seongdong-gu Office website. For more details, inquiries can be made to the Women and Family Division of Seongdong-gu Office or by referring to the single-parent family childcare leave support guide on the Seongdong-gu Office website.

Jeong Wono, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, “As we expand the support for childcare leave expenses, I hope that low-income single-parent worker families actively utilize this support to receive practical help and that it will also provide significant economic assistance. We will continue to create a child-friendly Seongdong-gu by promoting diverse and detailed family care policies.”
