Gwangju Emergency Action: "Prosecution Abandons Immediate Appeal, Calls Yoon a Puppet of Rebellion"

Civil organizations in Gwangju and Jeonnam condemned the prosecution, calling them "henchmen of the ringleader of insurrection," for immediately giving up an appeal despite the cancellation of President Yoon Suk-yeol's detention.

The Gwangju Emergency Action for Immediate Resignation of the Yoon Suk-yeol Regime and Social Reform held a press conference in front of the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office in Jisan-dong, Dong-gu, Gwangju, stating, "The prosecution leadership gave up an immediate appeal against President Yoon and instead directed his 'release.' By admitting themselves as henchmen of the ringleader of insurrection, the prosecution has denied its own reason for existence."

The group pointed out, "With the prosecution's decision to cancel the detention, President Yoon, the ringleader of insurrection who destroyed the daily lives of the people and set the Republic of Korea back, walked out of the detention center like a triumphant general. The people will surely hold the prosecution strictly accountable for this irresponsible decision."

They continued, "The prosecution should exist to protect human rights in the process of enforcing public authority. However, the rights they protect are only those of the powerful vested interests. They claim that 'suspension of detention execution' is the reason for giving up the appeal, but under the Criminal Procedure Act, an immediate appeal can be made against a decision to cancel detention."

Additionally, they added, "There is concern about the destruction of evidence, as the server of the Bihwaphone, which could reveal the full story of the insurrection, is at the presidential residence. The prosecution, which threatens democracy and acts as a henchman of the ringleader of insurrection, must be dismantled."
