A story has been shared about a third-grade elementary school student who saved his mother at home using CPR he learned at school.
On the 9th, Yonhap News reported that the Bucheon Fire Station in Gyeonggi Province awarded a commendation from the Fire Chief for CPR merit to Jeong Tae-woon (9), a third grader at Buwon Elementary School. On January 8th at around 10:20 p.m., when Jeong's mother suddenly collapsed at their home in Bucheon, he called 119 as he had learned at school and promptly performed CPR.
When the 119 paramedics arrived at the scene, Jeong's mother was in a critical condition, showing agonal breathing and no detectable pulse. An automated external defibrillator (AED) was also used. After emergency treatment, fortunately, Jeong's mother regained breathing and pulse but was unconscious and transported to the hospital.
Later, Jeong's mother received treatment for a heart condition and was discharged on the 14th of the same month. The fire station reported that she is currently living her daily life.
Jeong said, "When (my mom collapsed), I immediately recalled what I learned at school," adding, "I feel good that my mother recovered, and if friends act according to what they learned, they can stay calm."
Ji Jun-ho, head of the Bucheon Fire Station, said, "We express our gratitude to Tae-woon for saving his mother through a prompt and accurate 119 call and CPR," and added, "We will activate various fire safety education programs and do our best to promote CPR education and awareness that saves lives."
Meanwhile, the 'golden time' in cardiac arrest situations is known to be 4 to 5 minutes, making bystander CPR critically important. If a cardiac arrest patient is found and accurate and rapid measures are taken, the patient's survival rate can be increased.
