Seoul City is promoting the creation of emotional streets (Fun Street) where citizens can transform urban streetsides into distinctive and creative spaces.
On the 9th, Seoul City announced that it will select around three locations for the streetside creation project through a public contest from the 7th to the 28th. The emotional street creation project aims to create street spaces where people can naturally meet and interact.
There are four types of target site categories for the contest, and applicants can choose one type to apply for. △ 'Nature-linked type' emphasizing harmony with nature such as the Han River, mountains, and parks △ 'Attraction-linked type' that can enhance the charm of landmarks and contribute to tourism activation △ 'Daily life type' that utilizes everyday walkways to create emotional streets in daily life △ 'Commercial area-linked type' that provides emotional resting spaces and attractions to revitalize commercial districts.
The contest is open to all citizens regardless of age or residence. Autonomous districts can also propose target sites by gathering local conditions and residents' opinions. If a citizen-proposed site is selected, they will also participate in the design phase to create the space together.
After selecting the type of target site and submitting a proposal, the project will be developed in a way that highlights the unique characteristics of each space. The contest scope includes streets within Seoul with no width restrictions, where pedestrian traffic is frequent and the minimum length is 50 meters or more to encourage walking. Citizens can apply for one site per person, and autonomous districts can apply for up to two sites. Within the contest scope, proposals can freely suggest plans for partial or entire sections of the street.
Applications can be submitted by downloading the application form from the Seoul City website or the Nae Sonan-e Seoul platform and submitting it to the relevant autonomous district’s project department. The submission should freely describe the location of the target site, reasons for selection (problems, necessity, etc.), and the creation plan (draft).
Submitted sites will undergo consultation with related departments, internal review, and expert evaluation before the results are announced. After selecting the sites, the creation plans will be prepared within the first half of the year, aiming to complete the site development by the end of the year.
Im Chang-su, Director of Future Space Planning at Seoul City, said, "The Fun Street project is meaningful in creating special spaces along streetsides that citizens use daily, providing joy and emotion to the public." He added, "We ask for the interest and participation of citizens and autonomous districts to discover attractive streetsides through this contest."
