Jeollabuk-do has been selected as the domestic candidate site to bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics.
On the 28th, Jeollabuk-do received 49 out of 61 votes in the '2036 Olympic Bid Domestic Candidate Site Selection Vote' held at the Olympic Parktel in Bangi-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul, during the 2025 Regular General Assembly of the Korean Sports Council. Jeollabuk-do emphasized national balanced development and promoted 'local city solidarity.'

Thus, Jeollabuk-do will embark on a challenge to host the Summer Olympics in South Korea for the first time in 48 years since the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
