Criticism Arises Over High-Cost Public Restroom Remodeling
A public restroom costing a total of 900 million KRW has been built in Suseong-gu, Daegu, sparking controversy.
According to Yonhap News on the 20th, the public restroom at Suseongmot in Suseong-gu recently completed remodeling work. The remodeling was carried out by Spanish architect Daniel Valle. The new public restroom utilized a curved structural design and natural wood to harmonize with the surrounding landscape. Additionally, curved glass windows and circular washbasins were installed inside to differentiate it from existing public restrooms.
The remodeling reportedly involved a total of 900 million KRW (national funds), including 588 million KRW for construction costs. However, there are criticisms that the budget execution is excessive. A member of the Suseong-gu Council pointed out, "There are opinions questioning whether it is appropriate to spend 900 million KRW, equivalent to the price of an apartment in Beomeo-dong, Suseong-gu, on remodeling a public restroom."
In response, the district office stated its intention to develop it as a tourism resource. A Suseong-gu official said, "This remodeling is not simply for a public restroom," and added, "It will be utilized in connection with the planned tourism resources such as the Suseongmot floating stage and Sky Bridge."
