Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) company Deepseek has faced controversy over excessive collection of user data, leading government ministries in the fields of diplomacy and trade to block access to Deepseek.
According to government officials on the 5th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy have restricted access to Deepseek on computers that can connect externally based on their own judgment. Both ministries commonly handle a large amount of sensitive confidential information related to diplomacy and trade.
The government ministries' move to restrict access to Deepseek came amid concerns raised at the government-wide level that sensitive work information could be leaked during the use of generative AI.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety also sent an official letter the previous day to central government ministries and 17 metropolitan local governments, requesting caution in the use of generative AI such as Deepseek and ChatGPT.
The letter advised refraining from inputting personal information into generative AI. It also reportedly contained content emphasizing that the results produced by generative AI should not be trusted unconditionally.
However, the letter did not specifically mention that only Deepseek should be restricted.
Deepseek has been criticized for excessively collecting user information during the AI learning process. As a result, several countries including Australia, Japan, and Taiwan have taken measures to regulate the use of Deepseek.
