This event, hosted by the ‘Gupyeongri Port Fishing Village New Vitality Promotion Team’ (Director Shin Baeseong, anchor organization) and the ‘Dongguk University College of Korean Medicine Medical Volunteer Group Donghyeonhoe,’ was planned to improve the residential conditions of fishing villages and to provide benefits to elderly residents who have difficulty accessing Korean medicine treatment due to long distances and transportation or mobility issues.

The target residents are from the fishing village new vitality project areas (Gupyeong-ri, Guryongpo-eup; Gangsa-ri, Homigot-myeon) and nearby villages (Janggil-ri, Guryongpo; Mopo-ri, Janggi-myeon; Seokbyeong-ri, Homigot-myeon, etc.). The consultation hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and no prior application is required as on-site registration is available.

The visiting medical sharing program involves a large-scale participation of about 40 members from the Dongguk University College of Korean Medicine Medical Volunteer Group. It will provide basic health checkups, Korean medicine treatments such as acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping therapy for elderly residents suffering from chronic diseases due to hard labor, as well as herbal medicine prescriptions. Individual consultations will also be conducted to check health status and explain Korean medicine health methods.

In particular, to provide convenience for residents in nearby areas such as Gupyeong-ri, Guryongpo, where transportation is inconvenient, shuttle buses will be operated to minimize discomfort.

Kim Gwanghyun, head of the Dongguk University Donghyeonhoe Volunteer Group, said, “Knowing that this is a medically underserved area with many elderly residents, we decided to visit,” and added, “I feel great fulfillment that many residents were able to receive treatment through this volunteer activity.”

The Gupyeongri Port Fishing Village New Vitality Promotion Team received conditional approval for the basic plan of the Fishing Village New Vitality Promotion Project from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Review and Coordination Committee this year. They plan to establish a haenyeo culture archiving project that can attract young haenyeo and fishermen within the Gupyeong Port area by 2026. They will also actively promote the construction of a fishing village station to be used as a project base, social innovation programs to improve village residential conditions, and various unit projects.
