Traffic signals displaying the remaining red light time will be expanded throughout Seoul.

On the 5th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it will expand the installation of 'red remaining time display traffic signals' at crosswalks with six or more lanes to create a safe and convenient walking environment. Starting with 650 locations this year, the plan is to install them at a total of 4,000 crosswalks with six or more lanes by 2030. The signals will also be installed at locations with frequent jaywalking accidents involving four or more lanes connected to six-lane roads to promote a safer pedestrian environment.

The red remaining time display traffic signals inform pedestrians not only of the green walk signal time but also the red waiting signal time. This allows pedestrians to anticipate signal changes, increasing satisfaction and encouraging them to focus on the traffic signals, thereby reducing jaywalking.

The city previously installed these signals at 350 locations with heavy pedestrian traffic, such as Myeongdong and Gangnam. A satisfaction survey conducted with 500 citizens showed that 98.4% of respondents were satisfied. Notably, in safety-related categories, 97% of respondents aged 60 and above gave positive feedback, indicating that the expansion of red remaining time display traffic signals also helps improve pedestrian safety for the elderly.

Yeo Jang-kwon, Director of the Seoul Transportation Office, stated, "We will continue to expand traffic policies incorporating various ideas so that all citizens can enjoy a safe and efficient traffic environment."
