In the ‘2024 Traffic Culture Index Survey Evaluation’ announced by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Jinju-si in Gyeongnam was selected as the only excellent local government in the province among cities with a population of over 300,000, ranking third nationwide.
The Traffic Culture Index is a value quantified by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport every year for 229 basic local governments nationwide, reflecting citizens' level of traffic safety awareness. It is divided into four groups according to population size and evaluates 18 items in three areas: ▲driving behavior ▲walking behavior ▲traffic safety, serving as a representative indicator of regional traffic culture awareness.
A high regional traffic culture index means that the level of traffic safety awareness in the area is high and thus safer. Following its first-place ranking nationwide in both the 2023 Traffic Culture Index and Traffic Safety Index, Jinju-si ranked third in the 2024 nationwide group evaluation, becoming the only excellent local government in the province, thereby gaining external recognition for its outstanding traffic safety awareness and traffic culture level.
Jinju-si’s 2024 Traffic Culture Index scored 89.48 points, an increase of 2.38 points from 87.1 points in 2023, indicating an improvement in traffic safety levels.
In particular, the local government’s efforts in traffic safety administration, such as ▲implementation of regional traffic safety policies ▲efforts to secure traffic safety budgets ▲safety management level of commercial vehicles, all received an ‘A’ grade for the number of traffic accident casualties, showing excellence compared to other local governments of similar size. Additionally, ▲seatbelt wearing rate ▲helmet wearing rate for motorcycle riders ▲compliance rate with drunk driving prohibition showed excellent improvement and compliance compared to the previous year.
Mayor Jo Gyu-il said, “Thanks to the mature traffic safety awareness of our citizens, Jinju-si received a good evaluation,” and added, “We will continue to improve the pedestrian environment and expand traffic safety facilities to create a safer Jinju-si.”
