Germany, known as the "land of beer," recorded its lowest beer sales last year in history.
On the 3rd (local time), the German Federal Statistical Office announced that Germany's beer sales last year amounted to 8.3 billion liters, a 1.4% decrease compared to the previous year. This is the lowest figure since related statistics began being compiled in 1993.
Beer sales for export reached 1.5 billion liters, a 1.6% increase from the previous year. In contrast, domestic sales dropped by 2.0% to 6.8 billion liters.
Germany's beer sales have been declining every year. The beer sales volume, which was 11.2 billion liters in 1993, decreased by 25.9% over 31 years.
The Statistical Office explained, "Although there was a major event last summer, the UEFA European Football Championship (Euro 2024), the long-term trend of declining beer sales continued."
The industry attributes the decline in sales to heavy rainfall last summer. The German Brewers Association analyzed that beer sales were 2.5% higher than the previous year until May last year, but turned negative after summer.
According to market research firm Statista, Germany's per capita beer consumption in 2023 was 88 liters, ranking third in the world after the Czech Republic (128 liters) and Austria (99 liters). Compared to France (33 liters), it is nearly three times higher.
