Gwangju City is making an all-out effort to respond to heavy snow and cold waves, as subzero temperatures and significant snowfall are forecast for this week.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration's forecast on the 4th, Gwangju is expected to see more than 5 to 15 centimeters of snow and a sharp drop in temperature until the 9th.
In response, the city held a "Heavy Snow and Cold Wave Response Situation Assessment Meeting" on the 3rd to comprehensively review the road snow removal work system and protection measures for vulnerable groups during the cold wave.
As the snowfall period is expected to be prolonged and temperatures remain low, raising concerns about icy roads during commuting hours, the city will work closely with the five autonomous districts and major snow removal agencies such as the Second Ring Road to shorten the intervals between snow removal operations and ensure an organic response.
Community life instructors and the Dasiseogi Comprehensive Support Center will check daily on the well-being of vulnerable groups such as the elderly living alone and the homeless. In addition, the city operates 1,456 cold wave shelters and five emergency cold wave shelters at each district office to prevent casualties caused by the cold wave.
Bae Bokhwan, Director of the Citizens' Safety Office, said, "Heavy snowfall and low temperatures this week are expected to cause inconvenience and damage to citizens," and urged, "Please use public transportation as much as possible and refrain from approaching facilities at risk of collapse, such as old buildings."
Bae added, "If there is heavy snowfall, city officials will be mobilized to remove snow from residential side roads," and requested, "We ask citizens to actively participate in clearing snow in front of their homes and contribute to making Gwangju a safer city."
