The Democratic Party of Korea discussed reform measures for key national institutions such as diplomacy and defense, which were mobilized during President Yoon Seok-yeol's martial law, on the 4th.
Park Chan-dae, the floor leader of the Democratic Party, emphasized the need for reform at the 'Post-Martial Law Diplomacy, Defense, and Intelligence Reform Task Continuous Forum' hosted by the party's foreign affairs and security special advisory group in the afternoon, stating, "The December 3rd insurrection is an extreme example that reveals the structural problems and limitations currently held by diplomatic, defense, and intelligence agencies."
Park explained, "President Yoon spread risks to peace on the Korean Peninsula and conspiracy theories through foreign policies driven by ideology and extreme logic, using them to cause division. It has become a very important task for the future of the nation to promptly reorganize and reform the system."
The Democratic Party focused on strengthening democratic control and transparency in the fields of diplomacy, defense, and intelligence. The forum was attended by former Ambassador to Croatia Seo Hyung-won and Senior Fellow Kim Jeong-seop of the Sejong Institute, among others.
Wi Seong-rak, head of the Democratic Party's foreign affairs special advisory group, pointed out, "The December 3rd emergency martial law incident starkly revealed the need for reform of national institutions in the fields of diplomacy, defense, and intelligence in our country," adding, "Key personnel of security agencies were involved in the process of declaring martial law, and there was no proper democratic control and supervision."
Jo Jeong-sik, chairman of the Democratic Party's foreign affairs and security advisory committee, emphasized, "Considering the emergency martial law and the rapidly changing international situation following President Trump's inauguration, the importance and role of diplomatic, security, defense, and intelligence agencies have increased," and added, "It is important for the three sectors' institutions to enhance their expertise, increase transparency and accountability, and be reborn to be democratically controlled."
