Adonis Amurensis Blooms at Sangwangbong in Wando Arboretum
Bloom Delayed by Two Weeks Compared to Previous Years
At Sangwangbong in Wando, Jeollanam-do, which boasts pristine natural conditions, Adonis amurensis, a herald of spring, has burst into golden bloom. Adonis amurensis is a perennial wildflower of the Ranunculaceae family that blooms early, even in the cold of winter, signaling the arrival of spring.
Symbolizing wishes for good fortune and longevity, Adonis amurensis has a mysterious trait: it closes its petals at night and in the early morning, gradually opening them with the sunrise. The best time to view these flowers is between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
At Wando Arboretum, as part of a project to conserve forest plant species vulnerable to climate change, Adonis amurensis native to the Sangwangbong area has been monitored for over ten years since 2010. While the flowers bloomed on January 10 in 2023 and January 11 in 2024, this year’s bloom was delayed by over two weeks, occurring on January 24.
On the 4th, Ahn Byungseok, director of Wando Arboretum, said, “I hope the warm spring message brought by the golden blooms of Adonis amurensis at Wando Arboretum will become a message of new hope in 2025. We will continue to do our best to systematically conserve and manage plants vulnerable to climate change.”
