Gwangju saw a decrease in police report cases during this year's Lunar New Year holiday compared to last year.
The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency and the Gwangju Autonomous Police Committee announced on the 30th that they had carried out special security activities during the Lunar New Year holiday.
The police strengthened patrols in vulnerable areas, including 1,889 cash-handling businesses frequented by citizens (1,232 convenience stores, 244 jewelry shops, and 423 financial institutions), as well as traditional markets, commercial districts, and entertainment areas.
They also conducted emergency bell inspections and flexible patrols at 21 emergency medical institutions, including 6 dedicated severe emergency rooms.
Furthermore, to prevent crimes that increase during the holidays, such as domestic violence, dating violence, and child abuse, pre-monitoring was conducted. To protect victims, prompt joint investigations with related departments and emergency temporary measures were implemented, focusing on recovery and prevention of recurrence.
As a result, the average daily number of 112 emergency calls during this Lunar New Year holiday decreased compared to last year.
According to the police, the average daily number of 112 calls during the holiday period dropped by about 4.8%, from 61.6 cases last year to 58.8 cases this year. Although reports of major crimes increased by 19.5% to 7.1 cases, reports of theft and violence fell by 21.8% (2.4 cases) and 20.6% (6.4 cases), respectively.
Additionally, due to the heavy snow warning, the number of people visiting ancestral graves decreased, resulting in a 41.8% reduction in traffic accidents (from 9.8 to 5.7 cases per day on average during the holiday period compared to last year) and a 60.8% decrease in the number of injuries (from 15.8 to 6.2 people).
Commissioner Park Sungju stated, "Thanks to proactive and preventive policing, citizens were able to spend the holiday safely and peacefully. We will continue to do our utmost to ensure the safety of Gwangju citizens in the future."
