Jung Jae-ho, the first ambassador to China under the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, is concluding his term after 2 years and 6 months in office. According to diplomatic sources on the 27th, the Embassy of Korea in China held Ambassador Jung's farewell ceremony at 5 p.m. local time in Beijing.
Jung Jae-ho, who served as a professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Seoul National University before becoming ambassador to China, is an expert in Chinese political economy and was a classmate of President Yoon at Chung-Ang High School.
During the last presidential election, he provided policy advice to President Yoon, and shortly after the election in April 2022, he was part of the Korea-US Policy Consultation Delegation that visited the United States alongside former Foreign Minister Park Jin, playing a role in explaining President Yoon's China policy.
Jung was appointed ambassador to China in June of that year and officially took office as the 14th ambassador in August. Last year, he was subject to a Ministry of Foreign Affairs audit over allegations of 'gapjil' (abuse of power) toward embassy subordinates. The Ministry found that Jung made some inappropriate remarks during a training session for resident officers and issued a verbal warning in the name of the minister.
In October last year, President Yoon nominated former Presidential Secretary Kim Dae-gi as Jung's successor, and Jung began preparing to return to Korea. After China granted agr?ment (prior approval for diplomatic envoys) for former Secretary Kim, speculation arose that the ambassadorial change was imminent. However, due to the sudden martial law situation followed by the impeachment of President Yoon, who holds the authority to appoint ambassadors, Jung remained in office awkwardly without returning home.
Jung typically expressed his views through monthly briefings with Korean media correspondents stationed in China. His last public briefing was on December 2 of last year, one day before President Yoon declared emergency martial law.
Some speculate that if former Secretary Kim's appointment becomes uncertain and Jung returns to Korea, the Embassy of Korea in China?at the forefront of diplomacy with China and protection of Korean residents?may operate under a charg? d'affaires system for some time.
