Oh Se-hoon on Yoon's Detention and Prosecution: "Heartbreaking... Will Ignite Controversy"

Mayor Oh: "Gongsoocheo Should Be Abolished Even Now"

On June 27, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon expressed regret over President Yoon Seok-yeol being indicted and detained on charges of leading a rebellion, stating that "this will become a source of controversy for a long time during future trials."

Mayor Oh posted on Facebook under the title "Investigations and trials must be fair," expressing deep regret over the indictment of the president without a prosecutorial investigation.

Mayor Oh said, "From the beginning, there has been controversy over investigative authority, and the High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Unit (Gongsoocheo) had stated that it should step back from the investigation and that the police should conduct the investigation while the president remains out of custody," adding, "this is because it is important that all citizens feel the law enforcement is fair and, above all, that no legal disputes or conflicts are left unresolved."

He continued, "However, Gongsoocheo and the prosecution have been excessively fixated on whether to detain the president, causing repeated controversies and even raising questions about the fairness of the investigative bodies and the judiciary," and pointed out, "Both the investigative agencies and the judiciary must reflect on themselves and take responsibility."

Mayor Oh also stated, "Furthermore, the growing public distrust over the relatively delayed judicial procedures against opposition party leaders must be taken seriously."

He added, "Now, the public's attention is on the courts. No procedural issues should remain during the trial process," emphasizing, "Only then can the public agree with any conclusion and preserve the extremely divided national community."

Additionally, Mayor Oh urged, "Responsibility for the past confusion must also be clearly addressed. It has become evident that Gongsoocheo is an organization with problematic judgment at critical moments," calling it "the harm caused by the hasty and distorted prosecution reform under the Moon Jae-in administration," and urged, "Even now, abolishing it and readjusting investigative authority is the way for the entire investigative system to regain public trust."
