Last year, the average New Year's money received by middle and high school students was 74,000 won. The number one annoying nagging phrase was "It's about time you got married." This is the result of an analysis of KakaoPay remittance envelope usage data.
KakaoPay revealed remittance envelope data and the results of a poll from the lifestyle content "Payroun News" on the 24th.
According to the analysis of remittance envelope data, during last year's Lunar New Year holiday, middle and high school students received an average of 74,000 won in New Year's money via KakaoPay. This is 1.4 times higher than in 2021 (54,000 won). It is interpreted as being influenced by factors such as inflation. The average allowance given to parents was about 200,000 won.
The appropriate amount for New Year's money was calculated to be 50,000 won. When 78,538 people were asked about the appropriate amount of New Year's money for middle and high school students through Payroun News, 65% of respondents answered that 50,000 won was appropriate. While 60% of teenagers, the receiving age group, said 100,000 won was appropriate, 70% of people in their 40s to 60s, the giving age group, said 50,000 won was better.
When about 20,000 people were asked about the nagging they most want to avoid, 34% of respondents chose "It's about time you got married." This was followed by "You should lose some weight" (29%), "How much is your annual salary?" (19%), "Are you preparing well for employment?" (12%), and "Which university will you go to?" (4%).
KakaoPay announced that it held a Lunar New Year nagging T-shirt event. The T-shirts were designed in the form of a menu board with the message "I will accept loving nagging through KakaoPay," featuring common holiday nagging phrases. A KakaoPay remittance envelope QR code was placed at the top of the nagging price, allowing recipients to immediately receive the nagging fee. About 30,000 people participated in the event over four days from the 13th to the 16th. Fifty people were selected by lottery to receive the nagging T-shirts.
KakaoPay also held a "Lunar New Year Remittance Envelope Naming Contest" on its official Instagram. Over 4,000 users submitted names for envelopes they wanted to use during Lunar New Year, and "Haengunidubaem" (Lucky Two Snakes) was selected. The Haengunidubaem remittance envelope, along with "Happy New Year" and "Here's your nagging fee," can be used in the "Lunar New Year" category of KakaoPay remittance envelopes until the 31st.
KakaoPay said that the number of uses of New Year's money donation envelopes has been increasing every year. From 2020 to last year, the number of KakaoPay Lunar New Year remittance envelope uses increased more than fourfold. The amount of money exchanged via Lunar New Year remittance envelopes increased by 5.3 times.
KakaoPay said, "We have prepared various content and events in line with the trend of spreading the culture of giving and receiving New Year's money through Lunar New Year remittance envelopes," and added, "We hope users enjoy a joyful Lunar New Year holiday with their families."
