The Palliative Care Team of the Southeast Regional Radiation Medical Center hosted the 'Understanding Hospice Palliative Care' week-long event from the 21st to the 23rd in the medical center lobby.
This event was planned to help patients, caregivers, and visitors deeply understand the necessity and importance of hospice palliative care.
Hospice palliative care is a medical service provided by a specialized team consisting of doctors, nurses, social workers, and others, aiming to actively manage pain and symptoms in terminal cancer patients and alleviate the psychological, social, and spiritual suffering of patients and their families to improve their quality of life.
As a specialized cancer treatment institution, the medical center strives to provide comprehensive and high-quality medical services by offering palliative care alongside treatment. Especially with the continuous increase in cancer incidence, the demand for hospice services is growing, and the center has introduced hospice palliative care projects to expand its role as a regional public medical institution.
During the event, hospice-related materials and information were displayed in the lobby, attracting significant interest from visitors. Visitors enhanced their understanding of hospice by viewing exhibits that clearly explained the concepts and services of hospice palliative care.
Notably, on the morning of the 22nd, an OX quiz event was held to provide a fun opportunity to learn general knowledge about hospice, and in the afternoon, a worry doll-making experience using the macram? technique was offered, giving participants psychological comfort.
The medical center began a pilot operation of advisory hospice services on the 20th. Through a six-month pilot, it plans to strengthen professional services and proceed with the application process for designation as a specialized hospice institution after the pilot ends.
Lee Ha-young, head of the palliative care team, said, “We hope this event served as an opportunity to raise awareness about hospice palliative care. We will do our best to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.”
Prior to this, on the 20th, with support from the Busan Hospice Palliative Care Center, the 2025 Life-Sustaining Treatment Decision System event was held at the medical center. This event, aimed at raising awareness about a beautiful life and dignified death and promoting a proper dying culture, also introduced key services supported by the Hospice Palliative Care Center to help terminal patients and their families maintain dignity and peaceful daily life comfortably at home.
The medical center’s Education and Training Team guided visitors, local residents, and staff on the life-sustaining treatment decision system and assisted with advance directives registration. In a special session that followed, Professor Kim Sook-nam from Busan Catholic University delivered a keynote lecture on the topic ‘Conceptual Review of Life-Sustaining Treatment, Euthanasia, and Assisted Dignified Death,’ followed by a Q&A session.
