‘Training Future Scientists’… UNIST Successfully Concludes 2025 Korea Chemistry Olympiad Winter School

The ‘2025 Korea Chemistry Olympiad Winter School’ hosted by the Department of Chemistry at UNIST (President Park Jong-rae) concluded successfully.

A total of 52 first- and second-year high school students from across the country participated, showing enthusiastic academic passion. Notably, this winter school was conducted as part of the selection process for the Korean representatives to the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO).

The 2025 winter school was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, online chemistry theory lectures were provided for five days from the 6th to the 10th, targeting first-year high school students. Then, from the 12th to the 18th, all participating students stayed on the UNIST campus for six days to learn and experiment in various fields such as physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, and inorganic chemistry.

The highlight of this winter school was the evaluation process. Second-year students who achieved excellent results in the midterm, final, and experimental evaluations earned the opportunity to participate in the International Chemistry Olympiad.

On the last day, the 18th, a closing ceremony was held. Lee Pil-ho, President of the Korean Chemical Society, Oh Han-bin, Vice President of the General Affairs Department, and Jung Hyun, Chairman of the Chemistry Olympiad Committee, attended to encourage the students.

Jo Jae-heung, Head of the Department of Chemistry at UNIST and Director of the 2025 Winter School, stated, “I hope the students will use the knowledge and experience gained at the winter school as a stepping stone to continuously challenge themselves and explore new knowledge,” adding, “I expect them to grow into future scientists who give back the value of science to society based on what they have learned.”

This winter school was sponsored by the Korean Chemical Society, Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity, and LG Chem. With the meticulous guidance of UNIST faculty and the Chemistry Olympiad Committee, a high-level educational program was established. Through the winter school, students had the opportunity to grow by harmoniously experiencing both theory and experiments.
