원본보기 아이콘The "Hwangdo Bunggi Pungeoje," the representative fishing village ritual of Taean County, Chungnam, which prays for a bountiful catch in the new year, will be held in a grand manner for two days starting from the 30th, during the Lunar New Year holiday, at the Dangjip area in Hwangdori, Anmyeon-eup.
The Hwangdo Bunggi Pungeoje is a village ritual held annually on the second and third days of the lunar New Year. It has been conducted to prevent various accidents at sea, which is the villagers' livelihood, and to wish for peace and a good catch for the community. The ritual was designated as a Chungnam Intangible Cultural Heritage in 1991.
The origin of the ritual dates back to ancient times when villagers who had gone out to sea lost their way in the fog and drifted, but safely returned to Hwangdo by following a light emanating from the current Dangsan, where the Dangjip now stands. Since then, the villagers have regarded Dangsan as sacred, built a Dangjip, and began holding rituals there.
This year's event, hosted by the Hwangdori Bunggi Pungeoje Preservation Society, will begin at 6 a.m. on the second day of the lunar New Year (the 30th). Programs include "Saegyeongut," a ritual wishing for a good catch and the safety of the village at the house of the ritual host, "Dangoreugi," where the ritual host and offerings are led up to the Dangjip to plant the boat flag, and a five-colored flag running event (Bunggi running), among others.

The "Hwangdo Bunggi Pungeoje" attracts many tourists and photographers from all over the country due to its long tradition and fame. As a traditional event that is rarely experienced elsewhere, it offers plenty to see and enjoy, including food such as tteokguk (rice cake soup), so a large crowd is expected again this year.
An official from the county said, "We will work with relevant agencies to ensure the event is held safely and maintain order at the site," adding, "We hope many people will visit Hwangdo at the beginning of the lunar New Year and wish for abundant blessings throughout the year."
