GS Retail's supermarket GS The Fresh announced on the 22nd that it has launched a project to promote the consumption of domestically produced seafood.
The plan aims to support fishing households struggling due to changes in fish species and catch volumes caused by climate change, as well as the expansion of imported seafood consumption, while creating a win-win effect by securing differentiated seafood MD competitiveness. It is also expected to diversify the distribution methods of domestic seafood, which were mainly centered on raw materials, to attract new customer segments.

GS The Fresh introduced a development method where seafood specialist MDs directly handle everything from direct transactions with production sites to menu planning, ensuring price competitiveness against similar products using imported seafood.
The first product developed to promote domestic seafood consumption is "Korean Cuttlefish Stir-fry." It has been on sale at GS The Fresh stores nationwide since today. Seafood MD Jeong Gil-jae secured 50 tons of cuttlefish, whose catch temporarily increased last fall on the West Coast, and pushed forward the development of this convenient meal product.
The product is generously composed of domestic cuttlefish accounting for about 75% of the total product weight, and its most notable feature is the harmonious blend of a subtle smoky flavor and spicy taste from the special sauce. It can be easily prepared by simply pouring all the contents without any special preparation, and the price is 9,900 KRW per pack.
GS The Fresh plans to continuously expand its range of domestic seafood consumption promotion products by developing convenient seafood meals using octopus, abalone, anglerfish, and more.
Kim Young-kwang, head of the seafood team at GS The Fresh, said, "We launched this consumption promotion activity by actively utilizing the capabilities of fresh MDs to support fishing households facing difficulties due to climate change and other factors. Amid the recent trend of rising prices for imported seafood, we expect GS The Fresh’s domestic seafood consumption promotion activities to receive even greater response from consumers."
