Gwangju City announced on the 19th that it will operate the "Geo School Winter Semester," the flagship educational program of the Mudeungsan UNESCO Global Geopark, in two sessions from January 10 to 21 next month.

Geo School is a special vacation program that offers an intensive five-day course on various geology topics such as geoparks, geological eras, volcanoes, dinosaurs, and the formation history of local neighborhoods. The program combines theory-based classes with hands-on experiments and activities, making it popular among students.

In particular, this winter semester introduces a new "Geo School Shorts Program" for students who want to participate in Geo School but cannot attend all five days. This program allows students to learn one popular subject per day, including geological eras and earthquakes.

Geo School will be held at the education room of the Mudeungsan Global Geopark Center, located in the Jeungsimsa District of Mudeungsan National Park. Applications can be made online through the Gwangju City Baro Reservation website starting at 9 a.m. on the 20th, and the program is free of charge.

Lee Jungshin, Director of the Gwangju Arboretum and Garden Office, said, "Since its launch in 2016, Geo School has become a leading example as the first regular program planned and operated among national geoparks," and added, "We will do our best to help Gwangju students feel proud of Mudeungsan through educational programs linked to this regional heritage."

Meanwhile, the Mudeungsan UNESCO Global Geopark has been promoting the value of the Mudeungsan area's geological heritage and revitalizing the local economy since its first certification in 2018. A revalidation field inspection is scheduled between May and August.
