Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) announced that it will officially operate the "Visiting Knife Sharpening and Umbrella Repair Service" to enhance the daily convenience of residents starting January 10.

The "Visiting Knife Sharpening and Umbrella Repair Service," which has been in operation since 2018, is Seongdong-gu's representative community-based service that repairs dull knives and broken umbrellas free of charge.

Every year, the service receives great response from residents who have experienced inconvenience due to the lack of proper places to repair dull knives and broken umbrellas that are too valuable to throw away. Last year, an average of 47 people per day used the "Visiting Knife Sharpening and Umbrella Repair Service," repairing approximately 33,152 knives and umbrellas throughout the year.

It is also positively evaluated for promoting resource-saving practices and participation in environmental protection.

To increase convenience for residents, the district operates the "Visiting Knife Sharpening and Umbrella Repair Service" by rotating through 17 community service centers once a month. The service will be available from January 10 to June 30 in the first half of this year. Operating hours are weekdays from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM (registration closes at 4:30 PM).

To use the "Visiting Knife Sharpening and Umbrella Repair Service," residents must bring an ID card or resident registration certificate verifying their residency in Seongdong-gu and register on-site at the community service center. Each household can receive service for up to three knives, including scissors, and two umbrellas. However, commercial or high-priced knives (including scissors) and umbrellas are excluded from the service. Since knife sharpening involves three types of whetstone processes and umbrella repair is entirely done by hand, only the first 60 applicants per day are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

In case of high demand, registration may close early. Any schedule changes can be checked on the Seongdong-gu Office website.

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, "The 'Visiting Knife Sharpening and Umbrella Repair Service' is a representative community-based service with particularly high resident satisfaction and awareness." He added, "We will continue to actively discover and operate customized administrative services that can bring positive changes to residents' lives."
