Professor Seo Kyung-duk of Sungshin Women's University, known as a "Korean promotion expert," announced the overseas sales of the movie "Harbin."
On the 17th, Professor Seo posted on his social media account, "The movie 'Harbin,' which is currently enjoying a successful run in Korea, has been sold to 117 countries worldwide, including the United States, Japan, France, and Australia." He added, "It has already been released in the United States, Indonesia, and Malaysia, and is scheduled to be sequentially released in various parts of the world, including Australia and Taiwan from mid-month onward. This clearly shows that as Korean cultural content spreads widely around the world, people globally are now becoming interested in Korean history."
He continued, "The fact that it was sold to Japan is particularly encouraging. Three years ago, after the musical film 'Hero,' which dealt with the story of An Jung-geun, was released, there was a major controversy on Japanese local social media where An Jung-geun was regarded as a 'terrorist.'" He explained, "At that time, many Japanese netizens made absurd claims such as 'An Jung-geun is a terrorist,' 'Korea made a movie about a terrorist,' and 'Based on this movie, diplomatic relations with Korea should be severed.'"
He added, "This is the result of the Japanese government not implementing proper history education." He further explained, "It can be seen from the controversy caused in 2014 when Yoshihide Suga, former Prime Minister of Japan, referred to An Jung-geun as 'a terrorist who assassinated Japan's first Prime Minister and was sentenced to death.'" Finally, Professor Seo said, "I sincerely hope that the movie 'Harbin' will succeed worldwide and play a significant role in properly informing people about Korean and Northeast Asian history."
Meanwhile, the movie "Harbin," which depicts An Jung-geun's Harbin assassination, was released domestically on the 24th of last month. It stars actors Hyun Bin, Park Jung-min, Jo Woo-jin, and Jeon Yeo-been.
