As direct purchases of cosmetics through overseas online platforms increase, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced on the 13th that it will strengthen the safety management of overseas direct purchase cosmetics in collaboration with the Korea Customs Service, the Korea Consumer Agency, and local governments to prevent consumer damage.
First, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety plans to significantly expand the scale of cosmetic purchases and inspections from 110 cases last year to 1,080 cases this year. In particular, due to numerous cases of non-compliance with standards for heavy metals such as lead, nickel, and antimony found in color cosmetics and eye makeup products purchased from AliExpress, Temu, and others last year, products of the same type will be prioritized for inspection this year. To this end, a budget of 280 million KRW has been allocated for purchasing and inspecting cosmetics from overseas online platforms this year.
For overseas direct purchase cosmetics found to pose safety concerns based on inspection results, sales sites will be blocked through the respective overseas direct purchase online platforms and the Korea Communications Standards Commission, and the Korea Customs Service will be requested to prohibit customs clearance. Additionally, in cooperation with the Korea Customs Service and the Korea Consumer Agency, the selection of overseas direct purchase cosmetics for inspection will utilize ingredient analysis results and hazard information from the Consumer Injury Surveillance System (CISS). Plans and results of overseas direct purchase product purchase inspections conducted by various ministries, agencies, and local governments under the basic plan for cosmetics manufacturing and distribution management will also be integrated and managed.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety will provide integrated hazard information (product names, inspection results, product photos, etc.) on overseas direct purchase cosmetics on the 'Uigeum Safety Nara' website, allowing consumers to easily check safety concerns. It will also guide consumers on precautions to take when purchasing cosmetics through overseas direct purchases.
