Gangseo-gu, Free Destruction Service for Digital Storage Media such as PCs and Smartphones

Gangseo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon) will officially operate the "Free Digital Storage Media Destruction Service" starting this month to support the safe disposal of digital storage media (HDD, SSD, etc.).

This service was established to safely dispose of digital storage media, such as those from PCs and smartphones, which are difficult to handle when discarded, in order to prevent personal information leakage and theft risks in advance.

In particular, a multi-channel video recorder is installed inside the shredding box so that users can directly verify the complete destruction process of the storage media. However, storage media with batteries, such as smartphones, must have their batteries removed before being inserted into the equipment due to the risk of fire.

The service is available to Gangseo-gu residents and employees working at companies located in Gangseo-gu. Applications can be made in person by bringing an ID card or proof of employment to the Smart Information Division on the 6th floor of the Gangseo-gu Office main building. Operating hours are every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM and from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM.

The destruction of storage media takes place in the small conference room on the basement first floor of the district office, with the applicant present. Eligible storage media for destruction include HDDs (3.5-inch, 2.5-inch), SSDs, USB memory devices, and mobile phones with batteries removed.

The district office expects this service to greatly contribute to alleviating residents' concerns that may arise during the storage media disposal process and to preventing personal information leakage incidents.
