Samsung, POSCO, LG Lead in Decrease Amounts... HD Hyundai, SK, Hanwha Increase

Last year, Samsung Group's market capitalization decreased by 167 trillion won, the largest among domestic conglomerates. SK Group's market capitalization surged, surpassing LG Group to rise to second place. The total market capitalization of listed affiliates of large business groups decreased by 251 trillion won last year.

On the 8th, CEO Score, a corporate data research institute, surveyed the market capitalization of 79 out of 88 designated large business groups with listed affiliates last year, revealing a total amount of 1,651.6772 trillion won. This is a decrease of 250.6321 trillion won (13.2%) compared to the end of 2023 (1,902.3093 trillion won).


By group, Samsung's listed affiliates experienced the largest decrease in market capitalization. Samsung Group's market capitalization fell from 710.0801 trillion won at the end of 2023 to 543.3305 trillion won at the end of last year, a decrease of 166.7496 trillion won (23.5%).


Samsung Electronics' market capitalization decreased by 165.9297 trillion won (31.9%). Samsung SDI (15.5996 trillion won, down 47.5%), Samsung C&T Corporation (3.6585 trillion won, down 15.1%), and Samsung SDS (3.2653 trillion won, down 24.8%) also declined.


POSCO Group's market capitalization was 42.5 trillion won, down 51.3751 trillion won (54.7%). LG Group's market capitalization was 144.6465 trillion won, down 45.3758 trillion won (23.9%).


EcoPro experienced the largest decline rate, with its market capitalization decreasing by 60.2% (35.7773 trillion won).


On the other hand, HD Hyundai Group's market capitalization increased from 34.315 trillion won to 77.6695 trillion won in one year, a rise of 43.3545 trillion won (126.3%). It was the only large business group to more than double its market capitalization. Its market capitalization ranking also jumped from 10th at the end of 2023 to 5th at the end of 2024.


This increase was due to the shipbuilding boom and increased investment in power infrastructure, resulting in market capitalization growth for major affiliates such as HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (up 14.0705 trillion won, 122.9%), HD Hyundai Electric (up 10.8069 trillion won, 364.7%), and HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (up 7.5798 trillion won, 88.6%).


SK Group recorded a market capitalization of 202.7277 trillion won, increasing by 21.4127 trillion won (11.8%) and reclaiming second place in market capitalization from LG Group. SK Hynix's market capitalization increased by 23.5873 trillion won (22.9%) over the year, leading the group's market capitalization growth.


Hanwha Group's market capitalization also rose by 12.3133 trillion won (40%) to 43.0596 trillion won. Its ranking improved from 11th at the end of 2023 to 7th, entering the 'top 10'.
