The ‘Yeongdong-daero Underground Space Complex Development Project’ in Gangnam-gu, Seoul is about to break ground. An approximately 1,000m underground section between COEX Intersection (Line 9 Bongeunsa Station) and Samseong Station Intersection (Line 2 Samseong Station) will feature a large-scale integrated transfer center with an area of 210,000㎡, along with railways and roads, and a large green plaza will be created above ground.

On the 2nd, Seoul City announced that the technical proposal and preliminary design for the priority construction section of the ‘Yeongdong-daero Underground Space Complex Development Section 2 Construction Project (Architecture·Systems)’ have been approved, and construction will commence. In February, priority construction work will begin, including improvements to the Line 2 Samseong Station platform, finishing works for the metropolitan integrated transfer center’s GTX-A (Metropolitan Express Railway) function rooms (electricity, communication, mechanical rooms, etc.), and mainline ventilation shafts. The Section 2 construction project proposed by the Hyundai Engineering & Construction consortium will be carried out in conjunction with the civil engineering work, which began in 2021 and is currently in the excavation phase (26% progress).

The Yeongdong-daero underground space complex development construction project aims to expand public transportation and citizen convenience facilities within the international exchange complex district. An advanced transfer system based on rail and bus will be established, creating a future-oriented public transportation hub equipped with smart technologies. In particular, the project will connect the Samsung-Dongtan Metropolitan Express Railway, GTX-A and GTX-C lines, Wirye-Sinsa Light Rail, Line 2 Samseong Station, and Line 9 Bongeunsa Station, establishing a convenient and systematic railway system linking various parts of the Seoul metropolitan area centered on Gangnam.

Due to the large scale of the architecture and systems construction, the work is divided into two sections. Following the preliminary contract for Section 1’s detailed design (Hyundai Engineering & Construction consortium) signed last October, Section 2 also passed the technical proposal qualification review, allowing construction to proceed as planned. Considering the sharp rise in construction labor and material costs, the city adjusted the construction budget from the original 292.8 billion KRW to 360 billion KRW, an increase of 67.2 billion KRW, to ensure smooth project progress.

Accordingly, the priority construction section with completed detailed design will begin construction in February next year, and the main construction will proceed after 15 months of detailed design, followed by a value engineering (VE) review and design qualification review before the contract is signed.

The results of the design qualification review for the Yeongdong-daero Underground Space Complex Development Section 2 Construction Project can be found on the Seoul City website.

Kim Chang-hwan, Seoul City’s Technical Review Officer, stated, “The congested and aging area between Samseong Station and COEX will be transformed into a large-scale integrated underground space development, becoming a living and job hub known as the ‘Korean La D?fense’ and an advanced public transportation hub. We will diligently manage the project schedule to achieve this vision.”
