Daegu City Provides 200 Million KRW Disaster Relief Fund to Gwangju and Jeonnam for Muan Airport Tragedy... Joint Memorial Altar Established at Duryu Park

Daegu City expressed deep condolences to the victims and their families regarding the Muan Airport Jeju Air passenger plane accident, and announced on the 30th that it will urgently provide 200 million KRW in disaster relief funds to Gwangju and Jeonnam, lower all public institutions' flags to half-mast, set up a joint memorial altar, and support medical and volunteer personnel for psychological treatment if necessary.


Additionally, all events during the national mourning period will be conducted or canceled in accordance with the mourning atmosphere, including the cancellation of the New Year's Eve bell-ringing ceremony. Mayor Hong Joon-pyo of Daegu also expressed deep condolences to the victims and their families through Facebook on the 29th.

Daegu City has urgently prepared 200 million KRW in disaster relief funds, providing 100 million KRW each to Gwangju and Jeonnam, and plans to actively support necessary medical and volunteer personnel such as psychological treatment through close communication and cooperation with Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Muan County.


In accordance with the national mourning period, all public institutions including the city hall, district offices, and affiliated organizations will fly flags at half-mast until January 4th of next year.


The joint memorial altar will be set up at the An Byeong-geun Olympic Memorial Judo Hall in Duryu Park and will welcome visitors starting from the afternoon of the 31st. At 3 p.m. on the same day, Mayor Hong Joon-pyo and all senior officials of Daegu City will pay their respects at the memorial altar.


The New Year's Eve bell-ringing event scheduled for the 31st has been completely canceled, and the 2025 New Year's greeting meeting will be postponed. During the national mourning period, all events and gatherings will be canceled or minimized to match the mourning atmosphere.


In particular, Daegu City is not only conducting safety inspections of Daegu Airport but also strengthening inspections of railroads and roads, maintaining a 24-hour emergency disaster response system to prepare for disasters such as fires and snow removal, and all public officials are diligently focusing on their duties to ensure citizens do not feel anxious.


Mayor Hong Joon-pyo of Daegu said, “I express my deepest condolences to the deceased and their families and hope the accident will be resolved quickly,” adding, “Daegu City will also join the mourning atmosphere and do its utmost to provide support.”
