Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will implement safety measures, including limiting the number of people per zone, to prevent accidents as a large crowd is expected to gather at Seonyugyo, a popular spot for watching the New Year's sunrise.
The district has established more thorough safety measures than in previous years to ensure that visitors can safely enjoy the sunrise. First, each relevant department will conduct joint on-site safety inspections with Yeongdeungpo Police Station and Yeongdeungpo Fire Station on a regular basis. This is to identify locations for installing safety fences and barriers, and to check ambulance access routes and evacuation paths in case of emergencies.
On January 1st, from 6:00 AM to 8:30 AM, Seonyugyo will be divided into zones distinguished by colors, with entry limits set for each zone. The zones are pink, purple, red, and green, and wristbands of the corresponding colors will be distributed on-site in advance. This system aims to efficiently control the number of entrants, reducing congestion and crowd density at the site.
Additionally, to ensure smooth and safe movement on the slopes and stairs of Seonyugyo, a one-way traffic system will be implemented, and safety personnel will be deployed to guide visitors safely.
The district also focused on providing conveniences so that visitors can comfortably enjoy the sunrise and make their New Year's wishes without discomfort. Three warming shelters will be set up to help visitors escape the cold, equipped with heaters and warm tea.
Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “Since a large number of sunrise watchers are expected at Seonyugyo, we will distribute color-coded wristbands according to the number of people allowed in each zone to ensure safe viewing of the sunrise. Prioritizing the safety of our residents, we will carry out thorough safety management to protect a safe and comfortable daily life for our citizens in the new year.”
