People Power Party "Han Deok-su Impeachment Bill Rejected as Party Decision... If Quorum Is 151 Votes, Abstention" (Update)

On the 27th, the People Power Party decided as a party stance to vote 'rejection' on the parliamentary impeachment motion against Acting President and Prime Minister Han Deok-su. The People Power Party decided to abstain if the approval requirement is a majority of the total members (more than half), which is the standard for the Prime Minister, rather than the two-thirds required for the President.

Kwon Seong-dong, Acting Party Leader and Floor Leader of the People Power Party, told reporters on the day, when asked if the party stance had been decided, "We have decided to reject as the party stance," adding, "If Speaker Woo Won-shik sets the quorum by a simple majority, there is no point in participating in the vote, so we will abstain and strongly protest at that time." He continued, "If it requires two-thirds, we plan to have all members attend and vote."

He said, "The exchange rate has already risen to 1,486 won, and if it exceeds 1,500 won, a major economic crisis will hit South Korea," adding, "The approval of the presidential impeachment motion gave foreigners confidence that the South Korean system is working well, but the impeachment motion against Acting President Han has destroyed that trust, causing this phenomenon." He further stated, "The impeachment of Acting President Han is not for the country and the people, but for Lee Jae-myung himself," and added, "We just need to trust, believe, and wait for the investigative agencies and constitutional court judges."
