Japan Airlines (JAL) announced that at around 7:24 a.m. on the 26th, a network device connecting internal and external systems was subjected to a cyberattack, causing disruptions to the passenger baggage management system and others.
According to Kyodo News and NHK, the system was restored after more than six hours, past 1 p.m., and no customer data leakage was confirmed. The cyberattack caused issues with the system that communicates flight plans to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and the check-in and baggage management systems were temporarily suspended.
As a result, a total of 71 domestic and international flights were delayed by more than 30 minutes, and 4 domestic flights were canceled on that day. JAL also announced that one domestic flight would be canceled on the 27th. Additionally, access to the JAL application was reportedly unstable for a time due to the system disruption. Local police are investigating the possibility of a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack against JAL.
Japan Airlines expressed its sincere apologies, stating, "We deeply apologize for the inconvenience caused to passengers and related parties."
