Suwon Seodun, Gwangmyeong Soha, and Gimpo Sau Receive 80.6 Billion Won Investment Over 5 Years for Urban Regeneration

Three locations in Gyeonggi Province?Seodun-dong in Suwon, Soha-dong in Gwangmyeong, and Sau-dong in Gimpo?have been finally selected for the government’s ‘New:Village Contest Project’ in which Gyeonggi Province participated.

According to Gyeonggi Province on the 23rd, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport held the 35th Urban Regeneration Special Committee meeting on the same day and reviewed and approved 32 sites nationwide, including three in Gyeonggi Province, as targets for the New:Village project.

Introduced this year, the New:Village project is an urban regeneration initiative that provides apartment-level infrastructure or convenience facilities such as parking lots and parks to aging low-rise residential areas where full redevelopment is difficult, and promotes private sector voluntary maintenance of non-apartment housing such as multi-family and row houses.

For the three selected sites in the province, a total of 80.6 billion KRW, including 45 billion KRW in national funds over five years, will be invested to establish living infrastructure for improvements such as parking and safety, and 330 housing units will be supplied through private maintenance of aging houses via autonomous housing maintenance projects and individual reconstruction.

Seodun-dong in Suwon is an area where redevelopment was pursued to improve poor residential conditions but was canceled in 2016 due to lack of project feasibility. Through this project, public parking lots, small parks, and resource recycling centers will be created as resident convenience facilities, and the living environment will be improved by supporting autonomous housing maintenance projects and individual reconstruction.

Soha-dong in Gwangmyeong is a cultural heritage historical and cultural environment preservation area designated by Gyeonggi Province, where full redevelopment is difficult due to building height restriction regulations. Accordingly, the province will promote the nation’s first circular autonomous housing maintenance pilot project involving public participation to induce private sector expansion, and supply living infrastructure such as public parking lots and resident exercise facilities.

Sau-dong in Gimpo is a preservation management area within the Gimpo Redevelopment Promotion District, where the hollowing-out phenomenon of the old town is accelerating due to the development of surrounding new towns. To resolve this, public parking lots and living sports facilities will be created using park sites, and a maintenance support center will be operated to provide residents with consultation and information on housing maintenance projects.

Before the New:Village project contest, Gyeonggi Province systematically analyzed the status and problems of each region and intensively supported professional consulting to present solutions. Through this, the feasibility and effectiveness of the project were enhanced, and the completeness of the plan was further improved.

An Seong-hyeon, head of the Regeneration Planning Team of Gyeonggi Province, said, “We will continue to support on-site monitoring and consulting so that local residents can tangibly feel the effects of the New:Village project,” and added, “We will also strive to discover new projects focused on non-apartment supply in line with the government’s policy to expand housing supply for national residential safety.”
