Busan National University Museum (President Choi Jae-won) was recently awarded as an outstanding institution for its excellent achievements in the ‘Preservation and Utilization Project of Unsorted Buried Cultural Heritage.’
Hosted by the National Heritage Agency and organized by the Korean University Museums Association, the ‘Preservation and Utilization Project of Unsorted Buried Cultural Heritage’ has been implemented from 2020 to 2025 to systematically manage and utilize long-unpublished and unsorted artifacts held by university museums. The project also contributes to enhancing public cultural services through secured data and supports job creation for youth and career-interrupted individuals by providing professional manpower.
The Busan National University Museum has participated in this project since 2020, organizing over 10,000 artifacts excavated from sites such as the Dongnae Bokcheon-dong Tumuli Cluster in Busan, the Gimhae Yean-ri Tumuli Cluster, the Ulsan Geomdan-ri Site, and the Miryang Gorye-ri Site.
Based on these organizational achievements, the museum has actively conducted academic research and published eight volumes of academic research series, including ‘Dongnae Bokcheon-dong Tumuli Cluster 12, 13, 14, 15, 16,’ ‘Hamyang Baekcheon-ri Tumuli Cluster,’ ‘Miryang Gorye-ri Site,’ and ‘Sancheong Oksan-ri Site.’ Additionally, special exhibitions such as ‘Unfolding Bokcheon-dong Tomb No. 47’ were held to share these achievements, making continuous efforts to promote cultural development by sharing results not only with academia but also with civil society through the utilization of excavated artifacts.
Im Sang-taek, director of the Busan National University Museum and professor of archaeology, said, “Our museum recently reopened after a complete remodeling to celebrate its 60th anniversary this year. It is very meaningful to receive this award recognizing our long-term efforts in academic achievements and sharing of excavated buried cultural heritage in such a significant year. I hope this project continues so that university museums can secure diverse cultural content and be activated as academic institutions representing the region and academia, as well as multifunctional cultural spaces.”
