The government has launched a joint public-private effort to explore response strategies to the digital and artificial intelligence (AI) policies of the new U.S. administration.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 17th that it held the "5th Digital Trade Response Team" meeting.
An official from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy explained, "This meeting was organized to discuss proactive response measures so that Korean companies do not fall behind in the rapidly changing digital and AI environment in the global market," adding, "During the meeting, the ministry explained the 'Trends and Key Contents of Digital Trade Negotiations,' and academic experts presented on the 'Outlook of the U.S. New Administration's AI Policy and the Status of International Norms,' among other topics."
Professor Lee Joo-hyung of the University of Seoul, who gave a presentation that day, stated, "Major countries such as the United States and the European Union (EU) continue to announce policies in the digital and AI sectors, and especially the new U.S. administration is expected to actively engage in forming international standards and norms to secure global leadership," adding, "Therefore, our government should also actively participate in related international norm discussions."
Related industries suggested that, in addition to promoting digital trade agreements for the overseas expansion of digital companies, cooperative projects should also be pursued, and requested that the government regularly share major countries' policies and norm trends in new technology fields such as AI with the industry.
Shim Jin-soo, Director of the New Trade Strategy Support Office at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, who chaired the meeting, said, "Digital trade has established itself as a new paradigm across the global economy, and related technologies and major countries' policies continue to evolve," adding, "The government will actively respond to related trade issues to support the global market entry of our digital companies."
Going forward, the government plans to continuously share the latest trends in the digital trade sector with the industry and seek response measures through public-private cooperation.
