Unidentified drones have been continuously appearing in the New Jersey and New York City areas, causing anxiety among residents.
On the 12th (local time), AFP reported, "Dangerous situations where large drones fly overhead flashing lights and making their characteristic noise have continued for weeks, but it is unclear who is behind these actions and for what purpose." In the United States, drones can be used for business or recreational purposes, but they must comply with regulations set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

A resident of Bergen County, New Jersey, told the media, "It's crazy," and "It's quite concerning that these drones have been spotted but there is no explanation." Another resident posted on X (formerly Twitter), "I have been seeing drones every night since Thanksgiving (November 28)," adding, "They hovered at tree height or slightly higher." Some have even spread conspiracy theories claiming the drones are unidentified flying objects (UFOs) or that hostile countries like Iran are attacking the U.S. mainland.
In response, Congressman Chris Smith (Republican, New Jersey) reportedly sent a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin demanding answers. Congressman Smith stated, "Unmanned aerial systems have flown over New Jersey multiple times, including near sensitive locations and critical infrastructure, such as military facilities in my district."

Sabrina Singh, a spokesperson, said, "Initial assessments suggest this is not the work of foreign hostile forces or foreign groups."
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has acknowledged the drone sightings in New Jersey and is cooperating with other agencies. Three federal senators, including Andy Kim (Democrat, New Jersey), have requested immediate briefings from the FBI, FAA, and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). They pointed out, "Since late November, unidentified drones have appeared multiple times during nighttime in New York City and northern New Jersey, causing concern among residents and local police. According to reports, residents say some of the drones were larger than commercially available drones."
They added, "Considering drone intrusions at sensitive military facilities inside and outside the U.S. mainland over the past year, the potential safety and security risks these drones pose in civilian areas are particularly timely. Comprehensive responses from Congress and the administration are required to protect civilian infrastructure, safety, privacy, as well as military assets and personnel."
