The Dark Side of the U.S. Health Insurance System Seen Through the Murder of an Insurance CEO

On the 4th, the murder of an insurance company CEO in the heart of Manhattan, New York, has caused a major stir in American society. The shooting death of Brian Thompson (50), CEO of United Healthcare, in broad daylight carries significance beyond a simple homicide case. This incident has escalated into a massive controversy surrounding the inequalities of the U.S. healthcare system and the structural problems of capitalism. The suspect is Luigi Mangioni, a 26-year-old young man from a prestigious family. At the crime scene, he was found carrying a manifesto criticizing the healthcare system. In this declaration, he argued that "the U.S. has the most expensive healthcare system in the world, yet ranks only 42nd in life expectancy," strongly condemning the unethical behavior of large insurance corporations. He emphasized that companies like United Healthcare prioritize profits, causing harm to many people.

Americans Supporting the Shooter

This incident has sparked intense controversy in American society. Rather than mourning the slain CEO or condemning the act as terrorism, many responses have supported and sympathized with the suspect. Some citizens expressed anger toward the practices of health insurance companies and even showed understanding of the suspect’s actions. The McDonald's store that reported the suspect faced a backlash with negative reviews and was labeled a "snitch." Tesla CEO Elon Musk pointed out the problem in the healthcare system, stating that "providing affordable obesity treatments to the public would greatly improve the health and quality of life of Americans." Chae Tae-won, the eldest daughter of SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won, also voiced criticism on social media, saying, "This incident reveals the structural problems of the healthcare system." The U.S. healthcare system is centered on private insurance, with minimal public insurance involvement. United Healthcare holds the largest market share but also has a claim denial rate twice the industry average. Given that this murder targeted a corporate CEO, other senior executives in various industries are concerned about the risk of similar attacks. According to the security company Global Guardian, 70 requests for enhanced security were received within 36 hours of the incident.

Anger at Structural Flaws... Private Punishment Is Dangerous

American society is raising voices calling for deep discussions on healthcare system reform and the structure of capitalism in light of this incident. The U.S. insurance industry is being urged to undergo structural changes, and this event will likely accelerate those demands. However, methods involving violence only create social unrest and can distract from the focus on structural improvements. South Korea has one of the best-established health insurance systems globally. Domestically, it is essential to maintain and improve the balance between health insurance and private insurance to prevent similar issues. It is time to reduce medical shopping problems, secure financial soundness for the sustainable operation of health insurance, and strengthen the transparency and fairness of private insurance. This incident can be interpreted not as a mere personal crime but as an extreme backlash against the healthcare system and the structural problems of capitalism. Nevertheless, violence can never be justified, and solutions through systemic reform are necessary.
