National Archives and Presidential Archives Begin Inspection of Emergency Martial Law Records (Update)

28 People Conduct On-Site Inspections Over 6 Days

The National Archives of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety will conduct an inspection of the management status of records related to the declaration of martial law.


The National Archives announced on the same day that the inspection will take place over six days from the 12th to the 19th. A representative of the National Archives explained, "This inspection is a follow-up measure to the 'Request for Thorough Cooperation in Managing Records Related to the Declaration of Martial Law on December 3,' which was issued by official letter on the 6th."

The National Archives and the Presidential Archives have formed an inspection team of 28 members. Based on Article 19 of the Public Records Management Act and Article 22 of the Presidential Records Act, they will inspect the registration and management status of records produced before and after the martial law declaration at related institutions such as the Ministry of National Defense and the Presidential Secretariat.


The National Archives' inspection targets include 12 institutions: the Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of the Interior and Safety, National Intelligence Service, National Police Agency, Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, Army Headquarters, Navy Headquarters, Air Force Headquarters, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Defense Security Command, and the Republic of Korea Army Unit 3707.


The Presidential Archives will inspect the records management status of three institutions: the Presidential Secretariat, National Security Office, and Presidential Security Service.


If any deficiencies are found during the on-site inspection, immediate corrective actions will be requested.


Earlier, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety stated the previous day, "We have received related materials requested from the Presidential Secretariat on the 6th regarding the declaration and lifting of martial law," adding, "The materials received related to the declaration do not include agendas or summaries of remarks, so we are continuously requesting additional information."
