Choo Kyung-ho: "Presidential Impeachment, a Historical Tragedy Repeated... Must Be Rejected"

Impeachment Proposal Against Audit Chief and Others: "Democratic Party's Reckless Violence"

Choo Kyung-ho, the floor leader of the People Power Party, expressed regret over the December 3 emergency martial law situation but vowed to block the passage of the impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol.

On the morning of the 5th, at the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly, Floor Leader Choo said, "Over the past two days, the declaration of emergency martial law by the president caused great shock and concern to the people. As the floor leader of the ruling party, I deeply apologize to the public," expressing his stance.

Earlier, the People Power Party convened a party meeting at the National Assembly the previous night and confirmed opposition to President Yoon’s impeachment motion as the party’s official position. Meanwhile, six opposition parties including the Democratic Party reported the impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol to the plenary session of the National Assembly on the 5th, despite the ruling party’s absence.

Regarding the opposition to the passage of the impeachment motion, Floor Leader Choo mentioned that the National Assembly has been damaged by the opposition’s 23 impeachment motions.

Floor Leader Choo stated, "Under the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, the 23rd impeachment motion by the major opposition party has become an impeachment against the president," and added, "What remained after the previous impeachment of President Park Geun-hye was a starkly divided Korea and political revenge investigations into deep-rooted corruption. Those scars remain deeply everywhere. Impeaching the president again would be repeating a historic tragedy," he pointed out.

He continued, "Moreover, now they are unilaterally pushing to impeach the head of the Board of Audit and Inspection and the leadership of the Central District Prosecutors’ Office at today’s meeting without even the slightest effort to negotiate the legislative agenda," emphasizing, "The 22nd National Assembly has been damaged by the Democratic Party’s reckless violence," he stressed.

Floor Leader Choo further stated, "The Democratic Party’s all-out proliferation of impeachment motions targeting the Board of Audit and Inspection head, a constitutional institution, and even the president, the head of state, following cabinet members, political committee members, and investigative prosecutors, is a threat to the separation of powers that incites public division and conflict and paralyzes the functions of the Republic of Korea," and added, "The People Power Party will gather the unanimous will of 108 lawmakers to oppose the president’s impeachment and ensure its rejection."
