Overseas netizens poured out admiration over the National Assembly's near-immediate nullification of President Yoon Seok-yeol's midnight surprise declaration of martial law, which was effectively overturned within two hours. On social media platforms (SNS), cheers erupted with comments such as "This is how you protect democracy," "Very impressed by the level of the Korean people," and "A global exemplary case."
Earlier, around 10:30 p.m. on the 3rd, President Yoon Seok-yeol abruptly declared martial law. Following this, lawmakers gathered one after another at the National Assembly to convene a plenary session to block the move, while angry citizens also assembled in front of the National Assembly, physically blocking the military and police forces. Subsequently, at 1:01 a.m. the next day, the National Assembly submitted and passed a resolution demanding the lifting of martial law. From the declaration to the lifting of martial law, approximately two and a half hours elapsed, resolving the situation swiftly and decisively.
In response, overseas netizens have been expressing continuous admiration. On the 5th, hashtags such as 'South Korea' and 'Martial law' have been trending in real-time on SNS platforms like X (formerly Twitter).
One netizen marveled, "The fact that lawmakers rushed out as soon as martial law was declared, climbed the walls to enter, built barricades, drafted bills, and voted against martial law all within 1 to 2 hours is insane." They added, "It’s also amazing that citizens immediately walked out of their homes to protest against the military." Another netizen wrote, "South Korea’s citizens acted quickly and decisively to reclaim democracy and revoke martial law. This is exactly how democracy should be protected." Comments on the post included, "We should not fear the government," and "A global exemplary case showing how citizens should act toward their government."
Additionally, comments such as "Only one in 500 South Koreans owns a firearm, yet the people stopped a government that tried to overthrow the system using the military," "I truly respect the Korean people," "Very impressed by the level of the Korean people. It’s unforgettable," "I’ve become interested in the country called South Korea. Respect," "Moved by what the Korean people showed," and "Cheering for the Korean people" followed in rapid succession.
