A joint academic conference on the theme of ‘Prevention and Countermeasures for Illegal Fishing Vessels from China’ was held on November 29 at the Dokdo Hall of the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives in Seoul.

원본보기 아이콘Co-hosted by the Korean Society of Maritime Police Studies, the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, and the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation of Kunsan National University, this event was organized to share and disseminate research outcomes related to countermeasures and prevention of illegal fishing by Chinese vessels within South Korea’s exclusive economic zone.
On the day, stakeholders from universities, research institutes, and the maritime police gathered to present and discuss four topics concerning the active application of jurisdiction over illegal Chinese fishing vessels.
Under the chairmanship of Professor No Horae (Department of Maritime Police Studies) from Kunsan National University, Professor Go Myeongseok (Department of Marine Production System Management) from Pukyong National University presented ‘A Study on Various Legal Issues of Illegal Chinese Fishing Vessels,’ followed by discussions led by Professor Lee Byungkyu (Attorney, Department of Law) from Myongji University and Dr. Park Junmo from the Fisheries Economics Research Institute of the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives.
Chaired by Professor Kim Eunki (Department of Police Law) from Paichai University, Professor Jeong Choyoung (Department of Marine and Fisheries Public Talent) from Kunsan National University presented ‘A Basic Study on the Development of Virtual Training Scenarios for Crackdown on Illegal Foreign Fishing Vessels,’ with discussions by Attorney Lee Kwanghoo (Woo-myeon Law Firm) and Senior Superintendent Ha Taeyoung from the Korea Coast Guard Education and Training Center.
Under the chairmanship of Professor Lim Yooseok (Department of Maritime Police Studies) from Kunsan National University, Professor Lim Chaehyun (Department of Maritime Police Studies) from Mokpo National Maritime University presented ‘A Legal Review for Strengthening Jurisdiction over Crackdown on Illegal Chinese Fishing Vessels,’ followed by discussions by Attorney Park Sungwon (Taepyungyang Law Firm) and Senior Superintendent Jung Youngjin from the West Sea Regional Coast Guard.
Chaired by Professor Im Seokwon (Department of Marine Production System Management) from Pukyong National University, Professor Kim Dohun (Department of Maritime Police Studies) from Hanseo University presented ‘A Study on Crackdown Measures Using SAR & AI-Based Technologies for Illegal Fishing,’ with discussions by Professor Son Youngtae (Department of Maritime Police Studies) from Kunsan National University and Professor Kim Kyungdong (Department of Police Studies) from Uiwang University.
Professor Im Seokwon, president of the Korean Society of Maritime Police Studies and professor at Pukyong National University’s Department of Marine Production System Management, stated, “The active application of jurisdiction over illegal fishing vessels is not only a way to secure maritime security but also to protect our country’s precious fishery resources.” He added, “Through this joint academic conference, we hope that South Korea’s legislative jurisdiction as well as enforcement jurisdiction will be actively applied to Chinese fishing vessels illegally operating within our exclusive economic zone.”
