The Air Force will conduct a large-scale comprehensive air training exercise called 'Soaring Eagle' from the 25th to the 29th at Cheongju Air Base. Soaring Eagle, a South Korean Air Force solo exercise, has been held twice a year since 2008, and this year’s session is the second, following the one in May.
According to the Air Force on the 25th, this exercise will involve over 60 aircraft including F-35A, F-15K, KF-16, FA-50, F-5 fighters, KA-1 airborne control attack aircraft, E-737 airborne control aircraft, and KC-330 multipurpose air refueling transport aircraft, along with about 190 personnel.
Assuming scenarios of enemy localized provocations and full-scale war, training such as ▲ defensive support ▲ air interdiction ▲ emergency air interdiction will be conducted day and night. Defensive support is a mission to detect and intercept enemy air forces at the longest possible range through organic cooperation between friendly air and ground forces when enemy air power penetrates. Air interdiction is an operation to delay or eliminate threats by striking the enemy’s attack origin in advance when an enemy attack is anticipated. Emergency air interdiction is a mission where friendly fighters remain on airborne alert and preemptively block real-time identified enemy attacks.
The newly established Space Operations Squadron, formed in June, will participate for the first time in this emergency air interdiction training to practice emergency target processing procedures using reconnaissance satellites. Reconnaissance and multipurpose practical satellites monitor and capture signs of enemy threats, the Space Operations Squadron interprets the imagery and determines whether the targets require a response, and accordingly, friendly air forces carry out the mission.
