An illegal foreign resident successfully escaped by swimming in the sea to avoid a breathalyzer test but was eventually caught at home.
According to the Jungbu Police Station in Busan on the 25th, at around 1:05 a.m. on October 6, a man in his 30s, Mr. A, a Vietnamese national, was driving under the influence when his car crashed into a metal barrier at the entrance of Yongdusan Park in Jung-gu.
Afterwards, a tow truck driver arrived, noticed signs of intoxication from Mr. A, and reported it to the police. At around 3:20 a.m., when the police arrived at the scene and detected signs of drinking, as they were about to conduct a breathalyzer test, Mr. A pushed the officer and fled.
Mr. A ran away and jumped into the sea near Gwangbok-dong, swam over 200 meters to Yeongdo Island across the water, then took a taxi and fled to his home in Saha-gu.
The police secured identification information from the vehicle Mr. A abandoned, confirmed that he was an illegal resident, and tracked him down to his residence at around 12:20 p.m. that day, arresting him on charges including violation of the Immigration Control Act.
After the police investigation, Mr. A was handed over to the Busan Immigration Office and deportation measures were taken.
A police official said, "It appears he fled because he was afraid of being exposed as an illegal resident."
