Son Sentenced to 4 Years in Prison for Beating and Neglecting Mother Leading to Death

A son who neglected his mother, whose health deteriorated due to his assault, and left her body unattended after her death was sentenced to four years in prison in the first trial.

The Criminal Division 1 of the Busan District Court Seobu Branch (Chief Judge Lee Jin-jae) announced on the 9th that it sentenced A, a man in his 20s, to four years in prison on charges of abandonment and neglect resulting in death of a dependent.

According to the facts recognized by the court, A lived alone with his mother, who suffered from a mental illness. A assaulted his mother, claiming she secretly ate food or interfered with his computer gaming, and prevented her from eating properly.

A left his mother, whose health had deteriorated to the point where she could not even swallow water, unattended. Eventually, the mother died in her room on March 17 of last year.

Afterwards, fearing that the fact he assaulted his mother would be exposed, A left her body unattended in the room and was caught.

The court stated, "The social condemnation is very high as he neglected his mother, who was in a state where she could barely move, leading to her death," and added, "Considering A’s condition after the crime, including a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder, and the difficulty he faced in caring for his mother who suffered from a severe mental illness alone, the sentencing was determined accordingly."
